PM Matritva Vandana Yojana: Striving to Promote Maternal Health

Pradhan Mantri Matritva Vandana Yojana, a maternity benefit programme by the Indian Government, came into existence in the year 2017. The Ministry of Women & Child Development is the responsible body for the implementation of this social welfare programme. This Yojana renders a direct cash benefit to pregnant as well as lactating mothers of 19 years of age or above for the first living child in the family.

We are entirely aware of the fact that a healthy child needs a healthy mother. Maternal health deserves special attention by one and all as a healthy mother lays the foundation for the children to live a nutritious and quality-rich life. Maternal health plays a substantial role in the direction of capacitating women to make them go through easy as well as complication-free delivery.

Around one-fifth of the global maternal deaths got recorded in India in the year 2015. The most significant reasons behind this heartbreaking number are hierarchies at the social level and weak healthcare infrastructure. In rural regions of India, a major chunk of the female population suffers from malnutrition & Anaemia. Timely identification of health risks is crucial, and the prevention of any ongoing health-related issue is also essential.

Boosting Maternal Health is the Need of the Hour

  • The matter of worry is the fact that undernourished mothers give birth to babies with complications and low weight.
  • Malnutrition and complex health-related matters create hindrances in the path of healthy births as well as healthy pregnancies.
  • In India, there are numerous social factors that compel women to perform their household chores until the last stages of pregnancy and once they deliver the babies, which are far from healthy as their bodies don’t get the much-needed rest or time for getting through the healing or recovery process.
  • It affects their capability to breastfeed the baby in a proper way when that nourishment is a mandatory thing to look after in the initial six months.
  • It adversely affects the health of the baby and the mother.
  • Indian Government brought Pradhan Mantri Matritva Vandana Yojana in light to deal with such issues and boost maternal health for the betterment of the mother as well as the baby.
