
Launched on 31 July 2015, Bharatmala Pariyojana is a project sponsored and funded by the state government of India. This project comes under the Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) and is mainly funded by the Central Government. Such schemes are also funded by the State Government with a fixed share. The progress of any country relies on its transportation networks and also on how these transportation networks are nurtured. With this thought, Bharatmala Pariyojana Scheme has been brought into existence. The construction and development of roads is a great medium that contributes highly to the economic growth and development of a country. Having good roads also contributes to the growth of a nation as it brings additional benefits attached to it.
To avoid heavy traffic and increasing accidents in the country, constructing and maintaining smooth roads is the most important thing, and this is the aim behind the introduction of Bharatmala Pariyojana Scheme.
Introduced by the central government of India, a new umbrella project Bharatmala Pariyojana is a program that focuses on the construction and development of Highways. The aim of this project revolves around focusing on optimizing the freight efficiency and the movement of passengers around the country by linking the analytical infrastructural gaps through successful and constructive interventions like the Green-field expressways, Border and International connectivity roads, Coastal and Port connectivity roads, Economic Corridors, Inter Corridors, and Feeder Routes.

The objective of Bharatmala Pariyojana Scheme is the ideal allocation of resources for the highways sector. This project aims to focus on optimizing the efficiency of passenger movement and freight across the nation. By the end of 2022, a total of 24,800 km will be constructed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana Project. The task of implementing this programme has been handed over to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
